Three members of our club, namely John, Nigel and Leigh recently gave a presentation about amateur radio and some of its many facets to the Sea and Royal Marine cadets in Wigan.
The club is now going to deliver training to these cadets, including their leaders, in order to help them gain their Foundation licenses in the coming months.
The cadets welcomed this opportunity, as it dovetails nicely with their own military communications training. One area of amateur radio they are keen to pursue is amateur radio direction finding – ARDF as this enables them to further develop their map reading and orienteering skills along with radio direction finding which has a number of uses within the military and at sea.
The cadets are also working toward taking part in Exercise Blue Ham events in 2026 which takes place on the shared military and amateur radio 5MHz (60m) allocation. These events see military cadet stations communicating not only between themselves but with licensed amateur radio operators too.
All in all, working with the cadets is going to be a very worthwhile project for all members of our club to be involved with going forward.
Wigan is home to a branch of the national Sea Cadets organization, which includes a Royal Marines Cadets detachment. They offer personal development opportunities, activities, and qualifications for young people aged 10-18.
